Low-order services- Small shops that sell convenience items that people wouldn’t travel far for e.g. newspapers, not particularly expensive or special food or drink items including alcohol, magazines, books, cleaning items, stationary, household first aid items, pet food and a post office etc.

High-order services- Shops that you would travel a long way for e.g. jewellery shops containing expensive metals like gold, platinum and silver etc, precious gems like diamonds etc, expensive, high quality clothing, expensive alcohol, expensive food and technology etc.

Sphere of influence- Sphere of influence is the population of people or amount of people that visit somewhere every day. This is important because this number depends if shops are built.

Threshold- The difference between low and high order services e.g. the Savoy has a higher threshold than M&S.

Range- The distance someone is willing to travel to get to a high or low convenience store.

Reasons for starting a setllement 1000 years ago:

Hills/Mountains- Protection, rocks, shelter from weather.

Transport- Allow people to travel and trade.

Soil- Fertile soil is good for crops, also good for keeping livestock on.

River/stream etc- Water supply and food and rocks.

Wood- Good for wood and food.

Defence- A mountain or hill can protect from raids.

-Brownfield site- A brownfield site is an area previously used for industrial purposes. They may be contaminated with small amounts of hazardous waste or pollution. They can be reused once cleaned up.

-business park- An area where offices are.
-CBD- Central Buisness District, the buisness center of a city.
-dispersed- individual buildings spread apart.
-greenfield site- land that is used for building that has never been developed on before.
-linear- Where a settlement is in a line.
-nucleated- a settlement with a center.
-rural- A countryside.
-site- A building site.
-situation- Where a settlement is compared with the area around it.
-suburbanisation- The edge of city expanding.
-terraced housing- Attached houses.
-urban- A city.
-urbanisation- A city expanding
